Congratulations to the Vermont Sail Freight Project from Organic

We would like to extend a greeting of congratulations to our neighbors and inspirations involved with the Vermont Sail Freight Project, who recently met (and exceeded) their $15,000 goal on Kickstarter to help fund the building of a sailboat designed to transport goods from Vermont down the Hudson River into New York City and the Lower Hudson.

The 39-foot sailboat, named Ceres after the Roman goddess of agriculture and grain crops, is currently being built by an all-volunteer crew of students and members of the community and will be able to carry 24,000 lbs of cargo and only require a working crew of two. The boat will utilize the historic canal system, lakes and rivers to transport goods with a very low carbon footprint per ton-mile and will be making stops along the way to New York City.

The VSF project is on track to launch in Lake Champlain in July with its maiden voyage beginning in September.

We commend and support their vision to reignite a zero-emissions food trading network that will also inevitably build community. Stay up-to-date on the project's progress over on their blog

Peru protects its biodiversity with ban on genetically modified foods

John Patrick in Peru.

Peru is the first country in the Americas to ban genetically modified foods, with a law that protects Peru's biodiversity and the practices that have kept it in tact for so long, in the form of a 10-year ban on genetically modified food. The president of Peru, Ollanta Humala, really helped this legislation move forward and pass.

“In the end, it’s not a law that’s ‘against’ anything,” said Antonietta Gutierrez, a biologist at Peru’s National Agrarian University. “This is a law in favor of biosecurity. The idea is that there should be a responsible way of using technology, so that it helps us develop resources – and at the same time, doesn’t destroy what we already have."

Peru's new law puts its food policy closer to that of Europe, than to that of the US or many of its South American neighbors, further proving we in America have a long way to go fighting against GMO's.

Fashion for Haiti: One Million Hearts

As part of Fashion for Haiti: One Million Hearts, presented by the CFDA and the Urban Zen Foundation, John Patrick has created a one-of-a-kind hand-crafted contribution in the form of a heart covered in real kernels of dried corn.

"The Corn Heart is meant to explore and honor the Haitian farmers who are at the backbone of the true sustainability movement in Haiti. I am visiting Haiti as the guest of a farm family later in the year to learn more about the heritage seed movement in Haiti." -John Patrick

You can view the heart and place a bid up until May 2, 2013. All benefits will go to the Urban Zen Foundation.

The 2013 New Farmer's Almanac has arrived

We love this quote from Severine van Tscharner Fleming, the editor-in-chief of the New Farmer's Almanac: “A lot has changed for American agriculture since Ben Franklin wrote his (almanac), and we wonder how much will change yet. With this almanac, we assert our voices as new agrarians. No matter what the weather holds, we seek life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and farming is the way to get there."
