Congratulations to artist Phyllis Galembo

This year's Venice Biennale, as curated by Massimiliano Gioni, opens on June 1st, and runs through the end of November.  As artistic director of the 55th International Art Exhibition, Gioni is evoking the self-taught Italian-American artist Marino Auriti by titling this year's affairs the Encyclopedic Palace. On November 16th, 1955, Auriti filed a design with the US Patent Office depicting his Palazzo Enciclopedico, which was an imaginary museum meant to house all worldly knowledge, bringing together the greatest discoveries in a 136-story building that would stand 700 meters tall and take up over 16 blocks in Washington, D.C.

"Auriti’s plan was never carried out, of course, but the dream of universal, all-embracing knowledge crops up throughout history, as one that eccentrics like Auriti share with many other artists, writers, scientists, and prophets who have tried—often in vain—to fashion an image of the world that will capture its infinite variety and richness," said Gioni in a statement.

Among the 155 artists and special exhibits being featured in this year's exhibition is Phyllis Galembo. John Patrick first met Phyllis back in the late 1970s, as introduced by artist Jan Galligan, and the two have been longtime friends and mutual supporters ever since. Phyllis' inclusion in this year's Venice Biennale is well-deserved and we are so excited that she is representing the USA in Venice.

We invite you to Get Beautified

Our great friend and supporter Hannah Bronfman has launched her first app, Get Beautified.

The app acts as your personal assistant, helping you to find salons and spas with ease so you may book last-minute beauty appointments. The app allows you to explore and discover same-day bookings for selected treatments and you can even book an appointment for a friend. We love the elegant look and feel the app has, and of course, the creative concept!

The app is currently available with partnered salons and spas in New York City and will be expanding to additional cities soon. It's available for free in the iTunes store

We would like to extend a congratulations to Hannah Bronfman and her Get Beautified team for the creation and launch of an interesting, fresh and very useful app.

Introducing Project Food LA

Project Food LA is a group of educators, artists, gardeners, architects, designers and chefs formed out of an interest in responding to issues of food and justice, and in framing food production as a way of connecting to place and community. Project Food LA partners culinary education, farmers market offerings, and other diet services in the interest of interfacing in a holistic manner to a complex issue.

Project Food LA is beginning a series of programming about corn, and is inviting diverse guests to discuss the significance of maize, in light of the growing threat to heirloom corn and corn seed in Mexico. Project Food LA will gather together to discuss the significance of corn in indigenous cultures, and strategies for resiliency in the face of climate change and GMOs. The event's discussions will be available online at a later date.

The participatory dialogue will feature leaders Tony Skrelunas, program director of the Native America Program for the Grand Canyon Trust in Arizona, and Marcos Aguilar, leader of the El Sereno Charter School, Academia Semillas del Pueblo in LA. The talks aim to elevate understanding of the history of corn, from the practical to the spiritual and the contemporary relevancy of corn today.

Markets Create Community: A photo essay by John Patrick

We had a recent studio visit with Los Angeles-based artist, Steve Hurd.

We also are loving the Mar Vista farmer's market on Sundays. Our favorite picks from the market are date bars from the Date Girl, tamales from MASA and fresh almond butter from Fat Uncle Farms. The market also features seedlings from Home Grown Gardens LA and the volunteer-run community bike repair shop, Bikerowave, who will fix your bike for free.
